One of the larger agent-and-editor conferences in the country, running for over thirty years. Aimed at writers seeking representation, but the craft and business sessions are useful whichever route you take.
Texas Book Festival
Austin, usually autumn
A large public festival built around the Capitol grounds. Readers attend in volume, which makes it a genuine discovery event rather than a writers-talking-to-writers one.
DFW Writers Conference
Dallas–Fort Worth, usually spring
Craft-focused and long-running. Readers of The Writer magazine voted it the best writing conference in Texas.
SCBWI All Texas Writers and Illustrators Conference

What this means for a self-published author in Texas
Austin is the centre of gravity: BookPeople anchors the independent bookselling scene, and organisations like The Writing Barn and Austin Bat Cave run workshops and retreats year-round. Houston has its own small-press presence, including Madville Publishing. For a self-published author, the practical value is that Texas independent bookshops and library systems do stock local authors — which is one of the few routes to physical shelf space that self-publishing normally closes off, and it is worth planning your print edition around.
