California has more working writers than any other state and a publishing infrastructure to match, which cuts both ways. There is more help available than anywhere outside New York, and more competition for the attention of everyone who provides it.
We do not have an office in California. The work is done remotely, which is how nearly all publishing services operate — an editor reading your manuscript is doing the same job from any postcode. What follows is the part that genuinely is local: where California authors find readers, and what the state offers that is worth building a launch around.

Known for advanced manuscript sessions and late-night read-and-critique rooms. Has a long record of first-time authors leaving with deals.

Los Angeles, usually May
A single intensive day with literary agents on site taking pitches — useful if you want a fast read on whether your book has commercial traction.
Community of Writers
Olympic Valley, usually summer
One of the oldest workshops in the West, running over fifty years. A week of small-group workshops and craft lectures rather than a pitch event.

What this means for a self-published author in California
California is unusual in that the state contains both ends of publishing: major houses and design-led independents such as Chronicle Books in San Francisco, alongside one of the densest concentrations of self-publishing authors in the country. For an independent author the practical consequence is competition — a California-set novel is competing against a great many other California-set novels — which makes genre positioning and cover work matter more here, not less. The upside is that the state’s independent bookshops and library systems are large, active, and used to hosting local authors.

- Do you have a California office?
- No. The only office is in Miami, Florida. Everything is handled remotely, which is standard for editing, design and publishing work and does not change what you receive.
- Does being in California affect how my book is published?
- Not technically — Amazon KDP and the other platforms work identically wherever you file from. What changes is the market around you: more competition for local press and events, and more of them to go after.
- Are there tax implications for California author income?
- Royalty income is taxable and California has its own rules on top of federal ones. We are not qualified to advise on this — speak to an accountant before your first royalty payment, not after.
